1. David Coote’s Suspension and Investigation
After a thorough investigation into his conduct, Premier League referee David Coote has been sacked by PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited). The 42-year-old was suspended on November 11, following a video that surfaced on social media. Coote made derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in the video. The PGMOL launched a formal investigation, which eventually led to his dismissal, citing serious breaches of his employment contract.
2. Shocking Video and Derogatory Remarks
The video that triggered the investigation showed Coote referring to Klopp as “arrogant” and using offensive language about the manager. It appears to reference a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which Coote officiated. Klopp had criticized Coote after the game, claiming he was too lenient in his treatment of Burnley’s challenges.
3. Allegations of Drug Use and Further Investigations
Coote’s troubles didn’t end with the video. Shortly after, photos were published in the press, allegedly showing Coote sniffing white powder at the Euro 2024. UEFA suspended him while they investigated. In addition, the Football Association (FA) opened another investigation into allegations that Coote had discussed giving a yellow card before a Championship match between Leeds and West Brom in 2019. However, Coote denied any wrongdoing regarding the yellow card claim.
4. Coote’s Career and Future
Coote had a notable career, officiating in 112 Premier League games, including several involving Liverpool. He was also a respected VAR (Video Assistant Referee), working on 64 Premier League matches, 11 of which involved Liverpool. Despite his success, the allegations against him were deemed too serious to overlook. Coote has the right to appeal his dismissal, but his position in the Premier League appears to be over for now.
