UEFA has launched an investigation into Premier League referee David Coote following the release of a video that allegedly shows him snorting a white powder during Euro 2024. The incident, which surfaced on social media, has raised serious concerns about Coote’s conduct.
The 42-year-old referee was already under suspension by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after another video emerged, in which he was seen making derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. The Football Association is also looking into those remarks.
The situation escalated on Wednesday when a video posted by The Sun newspaper appeared to show Coote snorting the white powder while officiating at Euro 2024 in Germany. As a result, UEFA, which had previously suspended Coote, has now appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate potential violations of its disciplinary regulations.
In a statement, UEFA confirmed the appointment of the inspector, noting, “Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”
PGMOL has reiterated that it is taking the new allegations seriously. A spokesperson for the organization said, “We are aware of the allegations and are taking them very seriously. David Coote remains suspended pending a full investigation.”
The spokesman also emphasized that Coote’s welfare is a top priority during this time, and the organization is committed to providing him with the necessary support.
As investigations continue, more details are expected to be released. This case has sparked significant attention within the football world, raising questions about referee conduct and the integrity of the sport.
